ETIQUETTE AROUND HORSES
Horses for sale are big, strong animals and have a built in “flight” response to dangerous situations. If you want to ride a horse or have to be around one, then as a beginner you need to brush up a little on your horse-etiquette.
When around ponies for sale, always ask the trainer or anyone who’s in charge when in doubt, because your query could save you from a roundhouse kick to the face. An animal as big as the horse, can cause unintentional injuries.
Horses cannot see well right in front of their noses or behind themselves. Sudden movements may startle the horse and make it jump away or onto your foot. Throwing things around a horse or yelling are also not to be done as this will startle the horse, horseboxes for sale will also startle a horse.
Horses don’t appreciate being slapped or patted either, nor would they like it if you run up to them and suddenly jump onto their backs. They’ll buck you instantly and react in an unpredictable way, the same as stallions at stud.
Horses get uncomfortable if you stand under their heads or crawl under their bellies. The safest position to consider viewing a horse is from the sides. Don’t go behind or in front of the horse until the trainers says it’s alright.
